There are many theories, but the causes of Rosacea are not well understood. Some
researchers believe the disorder is an inherited tendency. Others believe that people
who blush more frequently are more likely to develop Rosacea, or that it is caused
by blood vessels dilating too easily, resulting in continual flushing and redness.
Another theory is that Rosacea is caused by the demodex mite, a parasite that lives
in the follicles and feeds on sebum. Some people react to the mite’s presence, and
when they do, flushing and distension of the vessels is the eventual result.
Yet another theory is that the helicobacter pylori bacterium living in the upper
colon is responsible for Rosacea. This theory came about when a new antibiotic was
found to treat ulcers in the stomach. During testing, it was found that most of
those in the group who simultaneously displayed symptoms of Rosacea saw a marked
improvement, if not reversal, of their Rosacea symptoms. This response has not been
proven. Studies are ongoing.
